Richard Newhafer, like Edward L. Beach, wrote a novel of what he lived in WWII, in this case as a fighter pilot in the Pacific War. His characters are well developed and they are courageous, yet also flawed and vulnerable. We see the fear and the fun as young men and women swept up in war do their duty, and the flying scenes are gripping.
