Sep 11, 2017 · The Hero’s Companion -An extended violin solo depicts Strauss’ wife, the singer Pauline de Ahna. He described her as, “very complex, very feminine, a little perverse, a little coquettish, never like herself, at every minute different from how she had been a moment before”.
The songs of Richard Strauss (1864-1949) are among the most memorable works of a composer who found a profound satisfaction in writing for singers. His wife of 55 years, Pauline de Ahna, had an important career as an operatic soprano, and their relationship certainly accounted, to some extent, for Strauss’s devotion to vocal writing.

She was an operatic soprano who trained in Munich and performed roles such as Pamina in Die Zauberflöte in Weimar, Elisabeth in Tannhäuser at Bayreuth, as well as one of the Flowermaidens in Parsifal.
The general’s daughter Pauline de Ahna, born on February 4, 1863 in Ingolstadt (she would make herself 11 years younger for professional reasons relating to her career) was not only a talented singer but also had a character with temperament.
