William Edgar Buchanan II (March 20, 1903 – April 4, 1979) was an American actor with a long career in both film and television. He is most familiar today as Uncle Joe Carson from the Petticoat Junction, Green Acres, and The Beverly Hillbillies television sitcoms of the 1960s.
Best known as the host of the vintage rock 'n' roll show called The '50s at 5, which aired in Los Angeles from the late '80s to the early '90s. Also the host of an afternoon talk-radio show on KORL in Honolulu, Hawaii. Buchanan was the adopted son of actor Edgar Buchanan, who played Uncle Joe on the popular '60s TV series Petticoat Junction.
Edgar Buchanan was often a professional man in Westerns, for example a doctor a judge, usdually a disreputable one. He portrayed the rascally Doc Black in Wichita, with Joel McCrea, and he was Doc Merriam in The Man from Colorado. He was the rascally mayor in the Destry remake in 1954.
Biography. Best known to TV audiences as Uncle Joe Carson on "Petticoat Junction," "Green Acres," and "The Beverly Hillbillies," Edgar Buchanan moved with his family to Oregon not long after his birth, and after studying at the University of Oregon, Buchanan followed in his father's footsteps, and became a dentist.
