Maria Elisabeth Lämmerhirt was the mother of Johann Sebastian Bach. She was a daughter of Valentin Lämmerhirt, a furrier and coachman in Erfurt. On 8 April 1668, she married her friend since childhood, Johann Ambrosius Bach. The couple left Erfurt in 1691 and settled in Eisenach, where in 1685 their eighth son, Johann Sebastian Bach, was born.

He was the son of Johann Ambrosius Bach, the director of the town musicians, and Maria Elisabeth Lämmerhirt. He was the eighth child of Johann Ambrosius, (the eldest son in the family was 14 at the time of Bach’s birth) who probably taught him violin and the basics of music theory.
