Perce is played by Ed Nelson, who had all the charisma and personality of a wet paper bag. Nelson was a guest on Gunsmoke six times. Nelson/Perce comes to town without any purpose. At the beginning of the episode, Nelson saves Matt Dillon's life by joining him in a gunfight in the bad prairie, against three outlaws.
When Josh Stryker returns to Dodge City after his release from 15 years in prison, he is a bitter man. Stryker was the former U. S. Marshal in Dodge, and Matt was his Deputy. Stryker was convicted for killing a ruthless outlaw that burned a house with a family inside. The family happened to be close friends of Stryker.
This is Foster's second and final Gunsmoke role. The usually menacing Johnny Seven appears here as a gunfighter named Harry Blucher. Seven's only other Gunsmoke participation was as one of Mace Gore's gang in Season 11's memorable "Seven Hours to Dawn." This is the first of three episodes in the series directed by Tay Garnett.

Seven years before Kolchak, The Night Stalker TV series began, Darren McGavin and Simon Oakland teamed up in this episode of Gunsmoke. It is great to see the character tension between them, with Oakland plotting to kill McGavin because he is too kind to Matt Dillon.
