I think the major thing with short stories is that they have to convey emotion pretty swiftly to catch your attention.

  2. I love all of Borges' short stories, but if I had to chose a favourite I guess I'd go with the Library of Babel. I don't want to ruin the premise, which is one of the best aspects of the story, or else I'd give a short synopsis, but know that I highly, highly recommend the read.   6. I'm also a big fan of pretty much anything Borges has ever written (all his short stories, including the Brief History of Inequity, but also his poetry). Cortázar's Los armas secretas is also a very good collection, and the eponymous short story is a masterpiece. Mori Ogai's Sansho the Steward is a good short story.
