Jun 2, 2023 · Bruce McLaren was a legendary figure in the world of motorsport, renowned for his exceptional talent as a racing driver, engineer, and team owner. Born on August 30, 1937, in Auckland, New Zealand, McLaren’s fascination with cars and racing began at an early age.
Bruce’s tragic death while testing at Goodwood in 1970 would have thrown lesser teams into disarray but under the guidance of Teddy Mayer and with the support of Denny Hulme, who stayed loyal to his compatriot’s team until his retirement in 1975, McLaren was on the cusp of achieving the ultimate success.
For McLaren the journey began in an unusual way: when he was a small boy he fell off a horse. That happened near his home in Auckland, New Zealand at a time in his life when cars meant nothing to him. As a result of the spill, Bruce contracted a disease which stopped the growth of his left leg for two years.
