The actress was born Zhang Ziyi on February 9, 1979, in Beijing to Zhang Yuan Xiao, a government economist, and Li Zhou Sheng, a kindergarten schoolteacher. (When she began gaining attention from American audiences, she flipped the order of her name to conform to Western style.) She has one older brother, who owns an advertising agency.
