A cutaneous abscess is a localized collection of pus in the skin and may occur on any skin surface. Symptoms and signs are pain and a tender and firm or fluctuant swelling. The most common cause of abscesses in cats is bite wounds. Often the abscess site is obvious on physical exam but blood work, biopsy, and bacterial cultures may be recommended.
