El Dorado is essentially a darker remake of Rio Bravo, with Wayne, Robert Mitchum, Hunnicutt and James Caan as the now archetypal quartet. But, though the situation is the same, the mood is crisper, tenser, with a heightened sense of pain, loss and death underlying the humor and action.

Rio Bravo has a more laid back feel to it, where El Dorado seems the more driven film. The bottom line is that both films are rated high by the audience in terms of enjoyment.
2017 saw another Spanish El Dorado movie, Agustín Díaz Yanes’ Gold (Oro in Spanish). Gold is loosely based on the expeditions of Aguirre and Nuñez de Balboa, who led the first European expedition to the Pacific, crossing the Isthmus of Panama in 1513. The movie is set in 1538 and is a fictional expedition.

The opening credits feature a montage of original paintings that depict various scenes of cowboy life in the Old West. The artist was Olaf Wieghorst, who appears in the film as gunsmith Swede Larsen.

However, upon arriving in the town of El Dorado, Thornton discovers from his old friend, Sheriff J.P. Harrah, that Jason's true motives are far from just.
