It was a loosely organized church, fearful of central organization, until 1885 when the new denominational structure was installed and the church became the German Evangelical Protestant Church of North America. The word German was dropped in 1912.
In the "Bible Belt" there are a lot of Evangelical Protestants who believe a completely fictional version of the history of Christianity. They believe, because it's what they've been told by their preachers, that the Early Church believed and worshipped exactly like modern Baptists and/or Pentecostals, and did so for several centuries after Christ's resurrection. . .
But one thing I like most about Anglicanism is the fact that we can accept the true Christian witness of all orthodox Christian denominations. We have everyone from High Church Anglo-Catholics, Anglo-Orthodox and Old Catholics to Low Church Evangelicals. Among Protestants, we take a lot from Lutheran and Reformed thought as part of the via media.
