Diagnosis. A diagnosis of sepsis is confirmed by a blood culture positive for bacteria, a white blood cell count either too high or low and/or other laboratory tests. Treatment for sepsis requires prompt intravenous treatment with a broad-spectrum intravenous antibiotic.
