This dramatic weakness dampened my potential to enjoy the story. But if you want a view of a vanished world from one who was there (Aben Kandel was born in 1897 and wrote this book in 1936; he would be approximately the age of his principle characters), this book is worth picking up. Good to have it back in print.

Aben Kandel was an American screenwriter, novelist, and boxer. He was screenwriter on such classic B movies as I Was A Teenage Werewolf, Joan Crawford's final movie Trog, and one of Leonard Nimoy's first starring vehicles, Kid Monk Baroni.
Novelist turned occasional screenwriter from the 1930s on. Kandel had enjoyed some success with his novels "Vaudeville" (1927), "Black Sun" (1929) and "City for Conquest" (1936, the source for the fine 1940 James Cagney film) before penning such enjoyable cinematic corn as "Thunder in the City"...
His father, Aben Kandel, was also a screenwriter, and his younger sister, Lenore Kandel, was a Beat Generation poet and activist. His uncle, Charlie Kandel, was a renowned monetary specialist, and was also a well-known philosopher in various elite intellectual circles. Stephen Kandel died in his home on October 21, 2023, at the age of 96.
