Sep 26, 2023 · Project overview. The 10th Ave S bridge was built in 1913 by the Chicago, Milwaukee, and Saint Paul Railroad. It was constructed to help separate railroad traffic from city streets. The bridge has reinforced concrete deck girder structure, reinforced concrete abutments and piers. Most of the 10th Ave S bridge is in poor condition.
History and significance. The Tenth Avenue Bridge, historically known as the Cedar Avenue Bridge, is a reinforced-concrete arch bridge completed in 1929. It carries Tenth Avenue across the Mississippi River in Minneapolis. The structure consists of 21 spans (seven main river spans and 14 approach spans) with an overall length of about 2,153 feet.
The 10th Avenue SE Bridge is 2,163 ft. in length, nearly 70 ft. wide and features 21 spans (7 main river spans and 14 approach spans). The 10th Avenue Bridge was closed on August 1, 2007, following the collapse of the 1967-era I-35W bridge located just upstream of the 10th Avenue Bridge. The bridge reopened on August 31, 2007, as a 2 lane bridge open to all traffic, plus a dedicated bicycle lane.
Please join us in celebrating the reopening of the 10th Avenue bridge on Tuesday, November 16, 2021. A ribbon cutting event is scheduled from 11:30 to 12:15 on the downtown side of the bridge and includes remarks from elected officials and project staff.
Michels Utility Services, Inc. installed 2,800 feet of 20-inch natural gas pipeline in two separate runs under the 10th Avenue Bridge during bridge reconstruction to serve the University of Minnesota campus. The pipelines were spaced 28 inches apart and mounted to custom-made hangers on the underside of the bridge.
