Breakheart Pass is a novel by Scottish author Alistair MacLean (1922–1987), first published in 1974. It was a departure for MacLean in that, despite the thriller novel plot, the setting is essentially that of a western novel , set in the Sierra Nevada of the American West in the late 19th century.

Breakheart Pass (1974) Charles Bronson is John Deakin, a U.S. undercover agent posing as an outlaw in order to get a ride on a train bound for Fort Humboldt on the other side of Breakheart Pass. The train is racing to the cavalry post with reinforcements, a doctor and medical supplies because of a diphtheria epidemic.
