Most of the main characters in this movie are played by more than one actor since the story depicts a family during a period of nearly eighty years. All transitions from one actor to the next are smooth; except for that between the actors who portrayed Carlo, the protagonist.
The Family (Italian: La famiglia) is a 1987 Italian film, directed by Ettore Scola and starred by Vittorio Gassman, Fanny Ardant, Philippe Noiret and Stefania Sandrelli. It was entered into the 1987 Cannes Film Festival.
"The Family," an album with a velvet cover, is meant to touch the extended family of man. Formal portraits, bookends in this 80-year saga, enclose the central story, which opens with the baptism of Carlo, a baby in his grandfather's lap, and ends with Carlo as a grandfather with a baby in his arms.
