Danny and Steve are migrant farm workers who wind up in Cat Tail, Florida. Cat Tail is run by Madden Packing and Danny works for Madden while Steve works for the underdog farmer named Nick. After the Tomato crop is destroyed by Madden, Steve takes Nick, Lola and the next crop to Atlanta where they sell it for big money.
Seemingly the only person with the guts to stand up for Talbot is a roadhouse juke girl named Lola Mears (Ann Sheridan). Fruit picker Steve Talbot (Ronald Reagan) sides with Greek farmer Nick Garcos (George Tobias) in his feud with packing-plant owner Henry Madden (Gene Lockhart).
During the depths of the Great Depression a hitch-hiker Steve Talbot and jukebox-joint hostess Lola Mears stumble into Cat-Tail Florida where farmers and pickers struggle under the buyer who rules by monopoly, dirty contracts and violence. Steve helps organize against the buyer, leading to further escalation ending in a lynch mob.
