Designed by Jewish architect Edward Solomons and inspired by the Spanish and Portuguese origins of its members, the synagogue was opened on 6 May, 1874. It was the first Sephardi synagogue in Manchester. Over the years the building has changed to reflect the needs of the congregation and in 1984 it was transformed into a museum.
