This beachside locale offers up unbeatable weather, a redeveloped historic downtown, and a perfect mix of fishing grounds. So we think our bold statement is more than justified. First of all, there’s the prolific Indian River.
This coastal survey map shows the old Indian River Inlet. An ingress to the Ays River was shown on Spanish maps in the 1500s. For the next 300 years, it was the most dependable entry to the Indian River south of Mosquito Inlet at what is now New Smyrna. By 1845, its name was Indian River Inlet.

Located at 480 North Indian River Drive, The Manatee Observation and Education Center is open year-round and features a classroom, exhibit area and gift shop open 6 days a week. Jul 5, 2024 · Fort Pierce has made the most of its location on the Indian River Lagoon. It’s easy to spend time hanging out in its City Marina, right at the base of downtown. There are great views and benches, a chickee hut bar/restaurant, fishing boats and, if you’re lucky, visiting manatees.
