The first novel, North and South, was published in 1982, and was followed by Love and War in 1984. The trilogy was completed with Heaven and Hell in 1987. All three novels debuted on The New York Times Best Seller list, with North and South reaching No. 1 within four weeks on February 28, 1982.
In Pennsylvania, George Hazard is bereft over the loss of Constance and has become obsessed with finding Elkanah Bent and exacting his revenge. He has Pinkerton's men tracking him, but they always seem to be one step behind. It takes a visit from Madeline to save him from himself.
When George Hazard learns about Orry's death, he is very sad, but decidec to go and help Madelaine. Meanwhile, Bent turns out to be alive. He goes to Pennsylvania and kills Constance Hazard (George's wife), and then goes to St. Louis and kidnaps Charles Main's little son.
