HBIGDA devised a set of “standards of care,” largely derived from Benjamin’s case studies, that sanctioned the criteria and diagnostic procedure for transsexuality.

In 1979 his name was used (with permission) in the forming of the Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association (HBIGDA), which released a Standards of Care (SoC) for transgender people. This SoC came to be known as the Harry Benjamin Rules, and were infamously limiting in regards to how gender dysphoria could be diagnosed.
