Steyr Rifles - History. Steyr was established in 1864 when Josef Werndl started the Waffenfabrik und Sägemühle in Oberletten, Austria. The company was launched soon after the death of his father, Leopold Werndl. The latter was a blacksmith that manufactured gun parts for various other manufacturers.

During World War I, Austria-Hungary experienced shortages of handguns and production of the M1912 was increased. Germany also placed an order for 10,000 Model 12s. After World War I, a commercial model the Steyr M1911 was produced and was quite popular with army officers, but Steyr had to rely on foreign exports to sustain production.
Waffenfabrik Steyr Austria manufactured both a long rifle and short rifle variation of the 1912 for the Chileans. The short rifle was intended for mounted and motorized troops.
Our Assessment: This Chilean Mauser Model 1912/61 was made in Austria by Steyr and originally chambered in 7mm Mauser. In 1961 it was re-barreled in 7.62 NATO (.308 Winchester) and had new markings added to its receiver. The new barrel is shorter than the original 29 ¼ inch Model 1912 barrel.
