Leon Bismark "Bix" Beiderbecke (/ ˈ b aɪ d ər b ɛ k / BY-dər-bek; March 10, 1903 – August 6, 1931) was an American jazz cornetist, pianist and composer.
Bix Beiderbecke (born March 10, 1903, Davenport, Iowa, U.S.—died August 6, 1931, Long Island, New York) was an American jazz cornetist who was an outstanding improviser and composer of the 1920s and whose style is characterized by lyricism and purity of tone. He was the first major white jazz soloist.
Bix was a genius, a jazz pioneer according to his peers and music historians. He wrote the compositions In A Mist, Candlelights, In The Dark and Flashes, as well as Davenport Blues. Bix was known as the ultimate gentleman and in those days it wasn't considered proper to turn down a favor, including someone buying him a drink.
