Ray Bradbury has some great short stories, though I'd be hard pressed to come up with a favorite. I want to say stuff like "A Sound of Thunder". I also think some of Stephen King's best work is either some of the non-horror (Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile as cases in point), or his short stories.
„Story of Your Life“ by Ted Chiang. It‘s the short story the movie Arrival is based on, and it is so. damn. good. It‘s basically about a linguist trying to communicate with aliens, but the more of the aliens language she learns the more she realizes that she starts to think like the aliens, which fundamentally starts to change the way she perceives her surroundings.
