Sep 23, 2022 · The Cemetery contains the remains of American soldiers and dependents from the Civil War through Vietnam. Officially closed in 1972, family plots remain for dependents of veterans already interred. The brick speaker’s stand, inside the cemetery entrance and to the left, was built in 1879 and is known as The Rostrum.
The Soldiers’ National Cemetery was turned over to the Federal Government in 1872, and transferred to the National Park Service in 1933. Gettysburg National Cemetery sign along Taneytown Road.
