Sep 7, 1979 · First and foremost in this book's favor is that it bears no resemblance to the movie of the same name. Beyond the Poseidon Adventure (Gallico, Dell Publishing, 1978) was written in anticipation of the movie, and I wish Irwin Allen had read it before he approved his script. I liked this story.

There is also a book entitled "Beyond The Poseidon Adventure" which is a sequel to the film, and begins immediately after the ending of "The Poseidon Adventure" The book seems to have suffered the same fate as the original Poseidon Novel, being twisted into an almost unrecognizable version of itself for the film.

Taken on it's own merits, the author employs a measured, educated voice to tell a boy's own adventure story complete with scavengers, pirates, unlikely heroes and stalwart American sailors who woo foreign (but not too foreign) damsels almost as an afterthought- but it's the book's unique nature as a period piece that make it interesting.

Apr 1, 1979 · The big, ugly ship sank at the end of his 1969 novel, slamming the door shut on a sequel. At the insistence of Irwin Allen he hacked out "Beyond" - a sequel to the movie. Allen then took the framework of this novel and made his own movie out of it when none of the key players wanted to come back, thus the presence of Michael Caine and Sally Field.
