WSLS-TV presently broadcasts 31 hours of locally produced newscasts each week (with five hours each weekday and three hours each on Saturdays and Sundays). In 1989, the station debuted First News at 5:30, which was solo-anchored by John Carlin and included live feature segments from a field reporter.

WSLS was the first television station in the region, officially signing on the air December 11, 1952. The station broadcasts from a transmitter sitting on top of Poor Mountain in Roanoke County, which has an elevation of 4,041 feet. WSLS was acquired by Graham Media Group on January 17, 2017.
