May 15, 2024 · Rehabilitation is fundamental to the criminal justice system. It helps to break the cycle of crime by addressing the underlying issues that lead individuals to offend. Rehabilitation focuses on transforming an individual’s thinking and behavior, providing them with the necessary skills to reintegrate into society upon release.
In contrast, individual deterrence means a criminal is simply afraid to commit the crime(s) again. Examples of rehabilitation and deterrence When we think of rehabilitation, we often think of sentencing drug users and drunk drivers to treatment or the violent offenders to “anger management.” These are classic examples but there are many more.
It then moves to explore how adult education is practised and under-stood within the prison context. Finally, this article analyses the relationship between prison education and prison rehabilitation, considering what kinds of education and rehabilitation may be conducive to supporting the holistic development of the person in prison.
