Aug 24, 1999 · "Hell Night" delivers the goods fairly well, and rates up there with "The Funhouse" as a well-produced, nice looking slasher film with style to spare. The 80's saw a glut of slasher films after the release of "Halloween," and most of them were wretchedly awful, so the gems stand out, and this is one of the gems.

A woman slowly pushes an arrow through the neck of an Indian (close up of arrow piercing the skin). A man is shot in the head while confessing in a church, blood is seen on the wall. Native Americans scalp people. Detached limbs are shown burning. A man gets his throat cut, blood pours through his hands.
Thankfully, its negative traits are minimized because the film never overstays its eighty-nine minute welcome and provides us with smarter entertainment than I'm sure many of us were expecting. The script, particularly the dialog, is just plain awful. The scenery is all wrong- the setting is the Sierra Nevada Mountains but there's not a pine tree or snow capped peak to be seen. The time period is mid to late 1800's and books from that time period are already old. The buildings are are also already old.
