2 days ago · As part of its major new Art of Action cinema season, celebrating the artistry of real action choreography, the BFI has announced that it will release Akira Kurosawa‘s 1954 masterpiece, SEVEN SAMURAI (Shichinin no samurai), one of the most thrilling epics ever made, on Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD for the first time on 21st October 2024.
Kambei kills the thief and rescues the child unharmed, observed by a crowd, and two men; the handsome young nobleman Katsushiro, and the wild-eyed Kikuchiyo, played by Kurosawa’s regular star actor Toshiro Mifune. As Kambei leaves town, closely watched by the delegation of villagers, first the one, and then the other approaches him.
The story is a compelling character drama anchored by typically excellent work for Toshiro Mifune and populated with a lot of interesting women. The three movies together are slightly under 5 total hours, and I’d rather watch them than Seven Samurai (though this is just personal preference).

Boasting terrific performances (with Shimura and Toshiro Mifune – as a peasant masquerading as a samurai – particularly memorable), superb camerawork, and expertly mounted battle sequences, Seven Samurai is undoubtedly one of the greatest action movies ever made.
A couple of days ago the BFI announced they are set to release Akira Kurosawa‘s Ikiru in 4K, now it’s Seven Samurai.Set for a 4K UHD (Ultra High Definition) for the first time in the UK in October.
Films like “Rashomon,” “Seven Samurai,” “Yojimbo,” and “Hara Kiri” reached global audiences. Then, in 1975, “Shogun,” the James Clavell novel rose to #1 on the New York Times bestseller list, followed in 1980 by the television mini-series, starring Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune. Japan was BIG, and so were the samurai.
