I feel like a lot of prog rock though experimented with pop. A prog band called Yes had a big hit with Owner Of A Lonely Heart which was basically synthpop with some rock. Another prog rock band called Rush experimented heavily with synthesizers and keyboards in the early 80s especially on the Subdivisions album.
