There are a lot of second tier cities connected by the I-85 corridor. It certainly drops off outside the cities, but if you go out west, the pop density drops like a stone, while in the SE it just dips and rises again. Looking at the arcgis map of pop density from the 2020 census, you can certainly see the regions in the real data.
