Liatris is a very forgiving plant, and will grow in many conditions. If your soil is sandy, a little extra water retention near the roots won't hurt. I'd just plant them as they are. Reach out to Native Plant Trust. They might be able to help. I think it's okay to shake out a lot of that nursery compost mix.

Worried about my liatris. I planted some liatris (blazing star) bulbs this past spring and nothing is poking out of the ground just yet. I am in zone six and liatris are native to where I live. My sister also planted the same bulbs and she mentioned her's were already sprouting. Should I be concerned? I planted 12 bulbs, something has to give!
