The Cyrix 6x86 is a line of sixth-generation, 32-bit x86 microprocessors designed and released by Cyrix in 1995. Cyrix, being a fabless company, had the chips manufactured by IBM and SGS-Thomson. The 6x86 was made as a direct competitor to Intel's Pentium microprocessor line, and was pin compatible.
Founded in 1988 by ex-Texas Instruments staff, Cyrix began as a specialist supplier of high-performance math co-processors for Intel 286 and 386 systems.
The last Cyrix design was actually better than anything AMD or Intel had at the time. It was hampered by having to use older processes. Cyrix Engineers were amazing in that they reverse engineered the x86 processor and actually had competitive, and a better design at the end.

By June of that year they were up to 180MHz as production was ramped at National and IBM (see press release). These processors were based on the Cyrix M1 (5×86) architecture and integrated basic graphics, and audio functions.

The Cyrix Cx486SLC is a x86 microprocessor that was developed by Cyrix. It was one of Cyrix's first CPU offerings, released after years of selling math coprocessors that competed with Intel's units and offered better performance at a comparable or lower price.
