May 21, 2002 · Joe Frank Cobb. Actor. The original fat kid from Hal Roach's Our Gang series. He was born in Shawnee, Oklahoma, in 1916 and was discovered while vacationing with his dad in Los Angeles. He was in 86 Our Gang comedies and made the transition from silent film to talkies.
Joe Frank Cobb was one of the top most favorite stars in the Our Gang series, trailing only Farina, Spanky and Buckwheat for appearing in the most shorts. Joe and his father were one day visiting the Hal Roach Studios when the noon whistle blew and they followed the casting people to lunch.
May 24, 2002 · SANTA ANA, Calif. - Shawnee, OK, native Joe Cobb, who played a cheerful, chubby boy named Joe in dozens of the "Our Gang" comedy films of the 1920s, has died. He was 85. Cobb died in his sleep Tuesday at a Santa Ana convalescent home, his sister, Lucile Frank, said.
