Jan 9, 2021 · New Bern is the second oldest European-settled city in North Carolina (the oldest is the town of Bath, northeast of New Bern near the Pamlico River). Back then, the colonial capital rotated depending on where the Colonial Governor wanted to live until William Tryon built the Government House in New Bern in the 1760s, raising taxes to pay for it.
