Historical background. Pilecki was a 38-year-old landowner and cavalry captain ( rotmistrz) in the Polish Armed Forces reserves when Germany invaded Poland on 1 September 1939. When the country was overrun by the Germans and the Soviets, he joined the Polish underground army.
