   • BERWICK ST. JOHN manor was a distinct estate of the abbey in the early 13th century. (fn. 66) It passed to the Crown at the Dissolution, and in 1541 was granted to George Howard. (fn. 67) In 1547 Howard sold the manor to Sir William Herbert (fn. 68) (cr. earl of Pembroke in 1551, d. 1570).
