Dunno much about Miles, but Yudkowsky is one of the more extreme types and is not taken seriously; what is being taken seriously is the risk of AI being misused for more mundane stuff like propaganda, as you mentioned, as well as bioweapons and stuff. You can't define a broad set of ideas (safety concerns) by their extremes (the basilisk people).
