Well, erasing the disk (not any partition or volume - the entire top level hdd) with Disk Utility and well, factory settings would mean re-installing the original OS which would be very old by now and as you already found out that doesn't work as Mountain Lion can't connect to the Recovery Servers anymore - as far as I know that has something to do with HTTPS protocols that are too new for it ...
