     From a Python prompt you can:

     I accomplished this in 4 steps.

     1 - convert pdf into jpg from this answer

     This is the command

     pdftoppm -jpeg -r 300 your.pdf output -

     2 - edit <output*.jpg> with KolourPaint (or another image editor) and add text or images as desired

     3 - open the just edited file (<output*.jpg>) with LibreOffice Draw

     4 - Finally, choose 'Export as PDF' option to output the file as a pdf

     There, you now have a PDF editor for Ubuntu.

     Note, that in a pinch, when you have to sign a document (but don't have a printer/scanner handy), you can take a picture of your signature, share it with yourself and then paste it into the document that needs a signature. This allows you to sign a PDF without having to print it out

     To open a password protected PDF you will need to develop at least a PDF parser, decryptor and generator. I wouldn't recommend to do that, though. It's nowhere near an easy task to accomplish.

     With help of a PDF library everything is much simpler. You might want to try Docotic.Pdf library for the task (disclaimer: I work for the vendor of the library).

     Here is a sample for you task:

     Docotic.Pdf can also extract text (formatted or not) from PDFs. It might be useful for indexing (I guess it's what you are up to because you mentioned Adobe IFilter)

     I don't know what your sample data is, but this gets pretty good approximation even using the binned data. Compare (1) without using floc=0 with (2) specifying floc=0 to force the left boundary to be at 0.
