With its space station setting and combination of Starfleet and non-Federation crew members, DS9 was specifically designed to stand apart from TNG.
It's at the end of the fiirst episode where Picard is assimilated -- which is also the last episode of that season, as everyne watching on TV at the time knew -- when Ryker, after the extreme dramatic bulid up, orders, "Fire." In the TV version, half a second later, we're hit with maybe the most dramatic line in Start Trek -- "To Be Continued."
