people here have made some great recs! especially his dark materials/the golden compass. here are just a couple more if you want to go more modern/YA, the hunger games and maze runner are always great (like somebody said). or if you want to go a little edgier and weirder, the gone series is one of my personal favs (amazingly diverse cast of characters, weird magic, just truly a wild ride)
