Marvel, and eventually DC, decided to stop doing event issues for like five years. Joe Quesada became editor in chief at Marvel and did a lot of things. Got rid of the Comics Code since movies, TV, and games got away with worse and surprised, nobody cared. No more crossovers and no more events. He felt crossovers lost all meaning.
