I have an August smart lock and it replaces the deadbolt turning mechanism on the inside of the residence, essentially turning it into a giant door knob. On the outside the deadbolt lock remains unchanged. However, I don't know of any smart locks that work similarly for just a passage set (i.e. replacing the inside door knob and nothing else).
