Capernaum (/ k ə ˈ p ɜːr n eɪ ə m,-n i ə m / kə-PUR-nay-əm, -nee-əm; Hebrew: כְּפַר נַחוּם, romanized: Kfar Naḥum, lit. 'Nahum's village'; Arabic: كفر ناحوم, romanized: Kafr Nāḥūm) was a fishing village established during the time of the Hasmoneans, located on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee.

In Scripture Capernaum is not mentioned outside the Gospels. When Jesus finally departed from Nazareth, He dwelt in Capernaum ( Matthew 4:13 ) and made it the main center of His activity during a large part of His public ministry.

Capernaum is where Jesus lived as he carried out his mission. Most of the chapters in the New Testament describe what happened when he was living in Capernaum – from his baptism to the last week of his life. Jesus chose his twelve disciples in this area on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee.
