At the time a potentially rabid animal bites you, there's no way to know whether the animal has transmitted the rabies virus. Once a rabies infection is established, there's no effective treatment and it usually causes death. If you think you've been exposed to rabies, get shots as soon as possible to prevent infection from taking hold.
If bitten by an animal known to have rabies, receive shots including fast-acting shot (rabies immune globulin) near bite area if not previously vaccinated and series of vaccinations over 14 days or 2 injections over first 3 days if previously vaccinated.
In some cases determine whether animal that bit has rabies before beginning series of shots; pets and farm animals can be observed for 10 days or tested on case-by-case basis; wild animals caught can be killed and tested; discuss with doctor if unable to find biting animal.
