Marco Ferreri’s “La Grande Bouffe” is to gastronomy as “The Exorcist” is to “Song of Bernadette,” which is to say eat before you go, you won’t be hungry afterward. It’s the story of four friends who gather for a weekend of eating and wenching that gradually reveals itself as a suicide pact.

LA GRANDE BOUFFE is like 120 DAYS OF SODOM, but with food instead of sex (though there’s also sex). The protagonists’ inexplicable dedication to their absurd task is reminiscent of Luis Buñel’s classic dinner party satire, THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL.
Known for its shock values, La Grande Bouffe depicts the abandonment of bourgeois with utmost satire. Thanks to a star-studded cast, it manages to pull off an absurd, ambiguous plot with charms, but once the shock values wear off, the magic quickly turns to bore.
