Johnny Got His Gun (1971) Rated PG. I've never much liked anti-war films. They've never much stopped war, for one thing. For another, they attract hushed and reverential praise which speaks of their universality and the urgency of their messages.
Published in 1939, Johnny Got His Gun is about a WWI soldier who wakes in a hospital and is forced to come to terms with his horrific injuries. The book is heavy, claustrophobic, disturbing, joyous at times, manic at others, and all-around soul crushing.
During World War I, a patriotic young American is rendered blind, deaf, limbless, and mute by a horrific artillery shell attack.
