It's the end of World War II. British Lieutenant Ernest Goodbody (Michael Crawford) is relating the story of how he won the war to a German officer. His "victory" is despite the unfeeling power mongering of one of his superiors, Colonel Grapple (Sir Michael Hordern).
Odlebog, who is simply obeying orders and finds the whole business of war quite inhumane, is killed beneath a tank navigated by Grapple. The present-day Goodbody, holding a lonely reunion for his men, is left to reminisce with the sole survivor, the cowardly Melancholy Musketeer.
